Concept of God in Islam

A common misconception Christians have about Islam is that they think Muslims have nothing to do with God except fearing Him. They think that God in Islam is just distant God and the way of worship Muslims should do is just through different works and rites God ordered Muslims to do without any spiritual relationship between a Muslim and God.

Attributes of God in Islam

To answer this misconception we must first talk about what the Quran tells about Allah. We can first give what some verses tell about attributes of God.These verses tell about the Mightiness and Mercy of God:

22.  Allah is He, than whom there is no other god — Who knows (all things) both secret and open; He, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. 23.  Allah is He, than whom there is no other god –the sovereign, the Holy One, the Source of Peace (and Perfection). The Guardian of Faith, the Preserver of Safety, the Exalted in Might, the Irresistible, the Supreme: Glory to Allah! (high is He) above the partners they attribute to Him. 24. He is Allah,  the Creator, the Evolver, the Bestower of Forms (or colors). To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names: Whatever is in the heavens and on earth, doth declare His Praises and Glory: and He is the exalted in Might, the Wise. (Holy Quran 59:22-24)

God is Close to Us

Now is God really distant from us? The Quran answers no:

186.When my servants ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them); I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me; let them also, with a will, listen to My call, and believe in Me; that they may walk in the right way. (Holy Quran 2:186)

Muslims Love and Fear Allah

Now, do Muslims love God? Or is it just about fear? Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) says in Al Bukhari:

Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, “Whoever possesses the following three qualities will have the sweetness (delight) of faith: 1. The one to whom Allah and His Apostle becomes dearer than anything else. 2. Who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah’s sake. 3. Who hates to revert to Atheism (disbelief) as he hates to be thrown into the fire.”

Does Allah love Muslims?

31.Say (O Muhammad): “If ye do love Allah, follow me: Allah will love you, and forgive you your sins, for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Holy Quran 3:31)

76. Nay. Those that keep their plighted faith and act aright, verily Allah loves those who act aright. (Holy Quran 3:76)

134. Those who spend (freely), whether in prosperity, or in adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon (all) men;for Allah loves those who do good. (Holy Quran 3:134)

Does Allah love the unbelievers?

32. Say: “Obey Allah and His Messenger;”but if they turn back, Allah loveth not those who reject Faith. (Holy Quran 3:32)

57. “As to those who believe and work righteousness, Allah will pay them (in full) their reward; but Allah loveth not those who do wrong. (Holy Quran 3:57)

Christians may come and say, “This is the difference between God in Christianity and God in Islam, as God in Christianity loves disbelievers as well”. Actually I find it misleading when Christians say so, as Christians keep on saying that if we don’t believe in Jesus as our saviour we will go to the Hell and the lake of fire and sulphur. So God in Christianity loves me but He will punish me eternally in Hell. Does these really match? I doubt.

  1. The reason any none muslims (not only Christian) think that the Muslim God is a distant deity is because of the way they Muslims behave.

They lay more emphasis on a mere mortal in the name of Muhammed than God. For instance they feel gravely offended any time someone draws a cartoon or says anything comical about this man.

Yet the same irritation does not occur when someone talks in the same manner about God. One wonders what is this obsession with Muhammad. The man brought Islam period. People worship God. NO amount of cartoons can change what Muhammad was.

    • Well, First I don’t see how the way Muslims behave when getting insulted in Prophet Muhammad than God, I am not sure how this can make people think that Muslims look that way to God. Muslims may get outraged when Prophet Muhammad is insulted than God, actually this may be the case in non Muslim countries because in these countries when God is insulted, in most cases they don’t mean Allah, but most probably God in Christian concept, which we as Muslims already consider as a blasphemy against God. But when Prophet Muhammad is insulted, then actually the insult is directed to Islam, that’s the difference. Sometimes there are non wise or violent reactions occurring from Muslims, but the concept of rage when Allah or Prophet Muhammad is insulted should be present because we actually feel zealous for our doctrines, may be this feeling should be present when we are insulted, but Islam should have higher value in us than anything else. Of course this temporary rage is not enough and you may find it happening by a Muslim who is not really a righteous Muslim, but it’s a good indication.

  2. My take on this is that even if someone was to draw a Muhammed with Big head and say he had big head. That will not change what the real Muhammed was.

Christians don’t care what one says or draws about their Jesus. What is important to them is the connection between them and God through genuine worship.

  3. I’m sorry but your thinking is twisted and I can see that the last time you posted was in june, I won’t be surprised if you are dead already (struck dead by God) for your hideous blasphemies. But no I know you aren’t dead God isn’t wicked so He won’t kill you. JESUS Isn’t a man so stop comparing him with Muhammad. Agreed muslims are a people of God but what u shouldn’t say is that Christians are wrong in worshipping Jehovah. He revealed Himself to Abraham our father and established a covenant with him over isaac and not ishmael…technically you guys were abandoned you’re a product of an intercourse that shouldn’t have happened. Jews and curistians alike descended from Abraham. Jesus is of Abrahams lineage, he isn’t a muslim he was a jew…..hope this sinks well intonur skull. And in Christianity we have a person part of the God head “The Holy Spirit” fear Him. Sins against Him are unpardonable. You and your oerverted quran dat says dat Christ didn’t die are wrong and if you did your studies well, you will see that john the baptist whom you wrote about, confirmed the Christship of Jesus.

    • No Akintunde I am not dead :). Well, Jesus himself said that he is a man:
Joh 8:40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I heard from God: this did not Abraham.
As for your point that you are right because you are descendants of Isaac and we are wrong because we are descendants of Ishmael, again this is a product of the Jewish racism, and that’s why God punished them:
Mat 21:42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner; This was from the Lord, And it is marvelous in our eyes? Mat 21:43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken away from you, and shall be given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.
So it has nothing more to do with the Israelites. So what about descendants of Ishmael, look at these scriptures:
Gen 17:20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.

Gen 17:7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after thee.

Gen 21:13 And also of the son of the handmaid will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.

Gen 21:17 And God heard the voice of the lad. And the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? Fear not. For God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. Gen 21:18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thy hand. For I will make him a great nation.

Isa 42:11 Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit; let the inhabitants of Sela sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains.

When I say that Jesus is Muslim. I am talking that he really preached the Muslim belief that he is NOT God, but his belief is consistent with the Islamic belief which is the belief of all prophets. This doesn’t mean that he adheres to Islamic law, as laws may change with prophets according to different circumstances.

As for what you are stating that sins against Holy Spirit is unpardonable, you can check my post about the Holy Spirit and guidance and see that the first people who sinned against the Holy Spirit were the Church Fathers whom actually you actually consider an evidence for the authenticity of your faith and those who stood against heresies:
