\nis a convert immigrant mexican-american
\nhumanitarian award-winning um
\nactivist international public speaker
\nand a single mother of an amazing young
\nman alhamdulillah who have had the
\nexperience to go on many dawah
\nexpeditions with israel alhamdulillah as
\na public speaker she has
\nhad the opportunity to speak in
\ncountries like sweden colombia brazil
\nand especially her native mexico she has
\nrepresented a variety of oppressed
\ndemographics
\nthrough her years as an activist and
\nhumanitarian she is also a co-founder of
\nembrace and currently serves as their
\nmarketing director and doing an amazing
\njob
\nwith our cover brothers and sisters in
\ndallas and other locations that they
\nhave opened up inshallah

\nsubhanallah
\num so where do i even begin subhanallah
\nwhy islam is so dear to my heart uh
\nso much so that i continue
\nuh to what they say is that once a day
\nor once you
\nare in this field always adaia and
\nsubhanallah i never leave home without
\nmy yslam pamphlets
\nand i’ll show you this is my little
\npurse
\nand i normally carry english and spanish
\nand
\nthe reason is because i’m bilingual so i
\nwanna um i wanna start
\nby telling you a little bit about my
\nstory and how
\ni came to islam so my my
\nstory began with actually 9 11 that was
\nmy introduction to this
\nbeautiful faith and when this happened
\nit actually happened three months prior
\ni actually moved from california three
\nmonths prior to new york city
\nand so my birthday is 9 12.
\nand um that morning of 9 11
\ni was supposed to go into the city and i
\nwas supposed to actually take a train
\nthat went under the twin towers but i
\nfell asleep
\nand then when i woke up the second tower
\nwas being
\num hit and so
\nit was it was very impactful to me
\nthat i could have been there but i
\nwasn’t it was almost like
\nallah giving me a second chance even
\nthough i didn’t see it
\nthat way then i see it now and
\num so fast forward um
\nyou know i i went and bought a quran
\nbecause
\none of the things that really captivated
\nmy attention was
\nuh the two words allahu akbar i didn’t
\nknow what it meant
\nuh but i kept hearing it and it was just
\nit was so repetitive that i i needed to
\nfind out what this meant
\nand sure enough i went to buy a quran
\nwhich was very difficult
\nat the time i didn’t know why islam
\nexisted
\nand obviously if i would have it would
\nhave been so much easier to just call
\n877y islam and get one for free
\num so i started reading the quran and
\nprior to this my journey my spiritual
\njourney began at a very young age
\ni always question the trinity i come
\nfrom a catholic background
\nand it never made sense to me i mean
\nthree and one
\ngoing into a confession booth which was
\nextremely scary
\num sometimes you don’t have sins to go
\nand confess
\nand yet you have to come up with things
\nbecause you have to go in there
\num so i remember
\ni had to i moved from new york to new
\njersey um
\nand short after that my son was born
\nand that’s really when my quest began
\nsubhanallah i visited
\na mosque for the first time which was a
\nvery very
\nfrightening experience i didn’t know
\nwhat to expect
\nand um obviously it was
\nit was very intimidating um so the
\nthe story just is so long i’m trying to
\nsummarize it for you all
\nbut um i finally go to north hudson
\nislamic educational center which became
\nmy second home
\nand um there was no one that spoke
\nenglish unfortunately
\nif i would have known why islam was
\nthere that story would
\nbe completely different um i was kind of
\ndisappointed
\nbut the gentleman that was there told me
\nin his broken english to come back that
\nthere was a class that day and i did
\nand so subhanallah i met sheikh
\nvery compassionate one of my very first
\nteachers
\nwho immediately made me feel comfortable
\nand at home
\nand i remember him pulling out all kinds
\nof material and
\nwithin that material obviously there was
\nsome wise and pamphlets mashallah
\nand so i went home i started um reading
\ni
\nstarted um you know educating myself
\neven further
\nand eventually actually ramadan is the
\ntime of year that i embraced islam
\nand not too long ago i found out that i
\nwas born in ramadan
\nactually when you go back and look
\nthrough muslim pro
\nyou’re able to see when you were born in
\nthe islamic calendar so i was born on
\nthe 6th of ramadan
\nand i converted the last day of ramadan
\nof that year subhanallah
\nfull circle and so
\ni decided to wear my hijab very soon
\nafter converting
\nand it was it was a test within a test
\nand another test and obviously allah was
\nwas building me to who i am today
\nand soon after i embraced islam and i
\nembraced my hijab i actually got fired
\nand my son
\nwas very very young so
\nit was very frightening times for me i
\nremember making
\na specific dua and i wasn’t able to find
\nwork for approximately two years
\nand i made a dua i raised my hands and i
\nasked allah subhanahu dala
\nto provide me with not any job i wanted
\na job where i can serve him
\nwhere i can serve his creation where i
\ncan wear my hijab
\nand where i could pray with of any
\nproblem
\nand subhanallah i still remember this
\nwas around
\noctober november-ish more or less
\nand why islam was doing fundraising that
\nnight
\nin in the masjid and the president at
\nthe time
\noverheard me speaking spanish and he
\nsaid
\nwe’re looking for someone like you and i
\nsaid well i think you’re my duo being
\nanswered
\nand he kind of didn’t understand what i
\nwas saying he gave me the email before
\nyou knew it i was emailing my resume and
\ni was calling constantly like so am i
\nhired am i hired when do i start
\nand subhanallah i made a lot of dua and
\neverything that i prayed for came true
\nwith this job that would last
\nseveral years for me and i became the
\nnational
\nhispanic daoa coordinator for many many
\nyears
\nand throughout this position i have been
\nable to travel around the world
\nand it has been not only very fruitful
\nbut it has been very beneficial to
\nmyself
\nmy family and everybody that i encounter
\nwith
\nbecause you see my beloved brothers and
\nsisters
\nislam is not just a religion like any
\nother religion
\nislam is a way of life as many of you
\nknow so islam
\nis from the minute that we wake up until
\nwe go to sleep
\nand so working with white islam i’ve
\nlearned that
\nany opportunity that we have um
\nit can be you know i mean i i have
\ni have so many stories we went to the
\nworld cup with um
\nwith why islam and actually brother abu
\nsamaya
\nwent with us along with many other
\nwonderful
\nbrothers and sisters from all around the
\nworld um
\ni remember we did so many social
\nexperience experiments
\nand people are so ready and so hungry
\nfor
\nthis message it’s just a matter of time
\nand obviously we need
\nwe need your donations in order to
\ncontinue these efforts
\nand so i remember and i’ll tell you this
\nstory because i think it’s
\nit’s imperative for all of us to
\nunderstand how dawah works
\nand how why islam connects hearts so
\nduring this world cup um trip which was
\nabout three weeks
\nand we had you know public figures like
\nuh brother bunham muhammad on this trip
\nalong with so many others um that came
\nand so i remember that our driver we had
\na designated driver
\nand mashallah he um he
\nhe was he was so kind but we also showed
\nthat kindness through action right so we
\nwere always taking care of
\ndon carlo and we were always asking him
\nif he was hungry
\nif he was okay if he needed water and i
\nremember um we went to the favela which
\nis the slumps of brazil
\nto give dawa um and that was such
\na unique experience um
\nthat we went to the slumps where there’s
\nno
\nauthority the authority is the gang
\nleaders
\nand so the gang leader was knocking door
\nto door with us
\ngiving dao a subhanallah just imagine
\nthat anyway
\nduring this trip and we decided to give
\nout um
\nuh food packages uh so uh helping han
\nwhich is one of our sister organizations
\nuh embarked on this trip as well and we
\ngave these packages
\nand i remember uh don carlo our our
\ndriver mashallah
\nhe um he was looking for the cheapest
\npackages for us to give out
\nand he was adamant about it and he was
\nlooking and
\nand mashallah we were so excited and you
\nknow people
\nasked about islam and people wanted to
\nknow who we were
\nwhere we came from and i remember that
\nday don carlos said you know today is a
\nday
\nand i didn’t understand what he meant
\nand he says you know what
\ni’m ready to be one like you and
\nobviously we all got teary
\nand he said i can’t believe that you
\ncame from so far to help my people
\nand show your faith through action
\nand here i am not doing anything so
\ni want to be one like you and
\nhe embraced islam subhanallah and um
\nagain we have tons and tons of stories i
\nmean throughout mexico
\nand one of the things that we have to
\nremember is that we are here
\num to convey the message like the
\nbrother pryor said you know
\nour goal is never shahadas because
\nshahadas are
\na huge responsibility upon us and so
\nwe got to make sure that we’re taking
\ncare of those shahadas as well
\num another um another
\nstory that i have to share with you all
\nis that many of you may not know this
\nbut my mother actually took shahada on
\nthe y islam hotline
\nsubhanallah and this was several years
\nago
\nand so um it was it was pretty um
\namazing because uh she saw me i did i
\nthink a television show about islam on a
\nspanish channel
\nand she saw me and she said um you know
\nwhy are you wearing that in your head
\nare you muslim there was a soap opera at
\nthe time i remember
\num for my spanish-speaking audience el
\nclone was on
\nwhich was a soap opera and
\nso it had tendencies islamic tendencies
\nbut obviously it was more cultural it
\nwas the moroccan culture
\nand uh and so i remember her asking me
\nbut i was
\nso scared to to share with her i don’t
\nknow why
\ni decided to prepare a box for her and i
\nsend her pamphlets
\nand brochures and books and a
\nquran in spanish everything in spanish
\nand hamdulillah she was able to read it
\nshe decided to call one night and the
\nrepresentative that she got
\ni guess they had a very very fruitful
\nrelate uh conversation
\num and so she decided to take shahada i
\nremember that day i was very busy she
\ncalled me i guess to tell me but i
\ndidn’t pick up i said i’ll call her
\nuh later and later became another day
\nand before you knew it i was back at
\nwork on monday and i had so many emails
\ncongratulating me i didn’t know why
\nthey were congratulating me and it was
\nbecause my mother had embraced islam
\nuh through the white islam hotline
\nsubhanallah
\nand so that’s that’s the other point i
\nwant to make that
\nwe have we have the spanish language as
\ni showed you here i have both pamphlets
\nin english and spanish always in my
\npurse right
\nuh for those of you that know when you
\ntravel
\nto any uh spanish-speaking country
\nislam is seen as something very foreign
\nforeign
\nand but it’s not looked down upon people
\nare so ready to receive this message
\nand this is why it is so important for
\nus
\nto contribute um both to
\nuh the why islam project and the porque
\nislam
\nand here’s why so for i don’t know
\ni mean i’ve been with igna for over 10
\nyears and
\nfor that long i’ve been traveling all
\nover the world giving dawah
\nhelping um you know establish different
\nmasjids and we actually build a masjid
\nin chiapas mexico with our
\nindigenous muslims and so
\num when you travel overseas
\nand you’re speaking spanish your own
\nlanguage to your people
\nsometimes they don’t they can’t
\ncomprehend or they can’t separate the
\nhead wrap
\nversus what’s coming out until you’re
\nable to provide
\nsomething tangible right like this like
\nthis pamphlet
\nso it is so important for us to continue
\nthis work and to be able to have the
\nresources
\nsuch as these brochures these flyers
\nthese pamphlets whatever you want to
\ncall them
\nand spanish qurans in hand this work
\nneeds to continue because each and every
\none of us
\nis responsible on the day of judgment
\nallah
\ndoes tells us that there is no
\ncompulsion in religion but
\neach and every one of us is responsible
\nto convey this message
\nand so as converts as rivers and new
\nmuslims we’re so excited
\nupon embracing islam mashallah to
\nto convey this message and so if we
\ndon’t have these research
\nresources we won’t be able to do so
\nso i want to invite everyone to
\ninvest in your achara because whatever
\nyou do here
\nyou will take with you and again this is
\nthis is ongoing
\ncharity right so it’s so important for
\neach and one of us each and every one of
\nus
\nto actually take that upon ourselves
\nto to actually whatever it is one dollar
\nfive
\nit doesn’t matter allah subhanahu wa
\ntala wants
\nconsistency from us for us to be
\nalways um inshallah that we
\nwe we make it habitual we we we always
\nare giving for his sake
\nbecause just like he gives he can take
\nit away from us
\nright so let’s make sure that these last
\n10 nights
\nwe put our blessings
\nuh give them back to to to these
\nprojects
\nbecause it’s so important for us to
\ninsha allah contribute uh to
\nwhy islam and islam
\nand so um the last point i want to talk
\nabout today
\nis my journey as far as
\nmy relationship with why islam why islam
\nis like i said at the beginning
\nwill always be very dear to my heart you
\nknow i have been able to witness
\nmany shahadas and even though that has
\nnever been
\nmy key point i don’t leave my house and
\nsay today
\ni plan on five shahadas absolutely not
\nobviously
\nlike the brother prior to me said
\nhidayah
\nyou know comes from allah
\nso keeping that in mind your intention
\nshould always be
\nto convey the message whether it’s with
\na pamphlet or
\nwith the best manners and who had the
\nbest manners
\nour beloved prophet sallallahu alaihi
\nwasallam peace be upon him
\nso let’s make sure that we
\nare always on our toes with our behavior
\nwith our manners
\nuh for us sisters if you do um absorb
\nthe
\nhijab let’s make sure that you know
\nhijab is not only
\nuh the the the piece of cloth that we
\nwear on our head
\nit’s also the way we carry ourselves
\nwhatever comes out of our mouth
\nwhatever we’re looking at whatever we’re
\nlistening to so it’s very important for
\nus to make sure that we’re representing
\neach other
\nwell and so i want to make sure that
\neverybody
\nunderstands that we all have a job in
\nthis dunya
\nand our job is to our purpose in life
\nis to worship allah subhanahu wa and
\nwhen we worship him by
\nconveying and sharing this beautiful
\nmessage of islam
\nwe we are really doing the best that we
\ncan and we are following our beloved
\nprophet
\nmuhammad peace be upon him footsteps and
\nthat’s what we should be
\num you know uh copying or
\nemulating inshallah so with that i just
\nwant to
\ninvite every single one of you of you to
\nonce again
\nuh please invest in your there’s nothing
\nmore beautiful
\nthan to know that you know your hard

\nuh you know there is there’s someone
\nactually benefiting from

\nalong they joined along with us for
\nabout 20 days they would come out with
\nus they would get down with us right
\nsubhanallah they were like
\ninspired and then they themselves turned
\ninto dao machines subhanallah they
\ncreated their own org
\nwe were using the pamphlets that we gave
\nmasha’allah and they went out there and
\nthey’ve been given dawah
\nand inviting people to islam and giving
\nshahada and this
\nall happened because marshall that we
\nwent on that trip mashaallah the world
\ncup
\nand we destroyed we distributed i think
\nlike ten twenty thousand
\nten to twenty thousand pamphlets just
\nwithin those twenty days at the world
\ncup subhanallah
\nand what was most transfer as well they
\nwere um
\nthey were translated to portuguese
\nportuguese yes
\neven in the language of the people which
\nallah tells us that he created us
\ninto nations and tribes to get to know
\none another so the language wasn’t a
\nbarrier
\nyou know because the smile is its own
\nlanguage so
\nwe were able to obrigado
\nand one of the most amazing things like
\nwe said when we’re given that was
\nespecially in these other countries it’s
\nabout to show why islam is not national
\nbut it’s become internet it was internet
\nit’s international as well that
\nthese individuals we would give out a
\npamphlet to one person i remember
\non the train or the bus whatever it was
\nand we gave out a pamphlet to one person
\neverybody’s looking at you like
\nyou
\nand some people would just stop right
\nwhere they were they would kind of put
\ntheir foot up against the building and
\nthey would start to read these pamphlets
\nsubhanallah and engage within those
\npamphlets that why islam put out during
\nthat time muhammad
\nand we continue to put out now inshallah
